Social networks : changing conversation

I’ve been sitting at home the last few days due to my foot injury and have had a lot of time to just gather my thoughts.  Easy task ? Hell No !

I had found a post that I wrote months ago but never published on ‘The Art of Conversation’ which I have now posted up.  It got me thinking on a few other things which have been coming to mind.

I suppose we all have ‘real’ conversations wherein we talk and communicate with each other.  However ‘who’ are those conversations with ? People at work ? People at home ? People that we meet at a social gathering ?

The next question I ask myself is ‘how real’ are those conversations ? They are pretty generic when I look back at my own conversations with these people albeit with a handful of people whereby the conversation stems to a deeper level than just ‘hi, hello, how’s it going’.

So how do social networks come into play with this topic ? I suppose with the advent of various social networking platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Hi5, Friendster, Linkedin, Internations, ASW etc there has been an increase in the number of ‘friends’ that we now have as compared to say perhaps 10 years ago.

There was a time when ‘friends’ were people whom we were close to and / or grew up with or went to school with or went to university with.  They were also people who belonged to our local neighbourhood, playgroups, sports clubs etc.   These friends changed as we moved along in life i.e moved to another city or country; changed schools; changed jobs etc.   Of course we all have our ‘good friends’ who have known us since our childhood days and despite all the changes in demographics – we have maintained those friendships.

With the development of social networking platforms, even if one were to move countries, it is now possible to still be ‘friends’ with those from our past.  There is a way to reconnect with people from our yesteryears – so much so that my uncles and aunts are now on sites such as Facebook and catching up with THEIR old friends via their children.

Let’s take Facebook as an example.  If you take a few minutes and go through the wall posts and photo comments of ONE friend – you are more than likely to find them commenting on at least 30 different people.  There are people such as myself who have almost 1500 ‘friends’ on FB.  Funnily enough – I actually ‘know’ most of these people either by way of having gone to school (I went to 3 different schools growing up) with them, university,  and work (3 different countries).  Now add on to this that I am now living in a 4th country for the past 2 years and have met a huge number of people between work and my social circuit too.

A lot of these people are acquaintances; and a few are social friends i.e. people who I can count on to go out and have a few laughs; even fewer are my close friends and they are scattered globally.  So YES – I am able to stay in touch and communicate with all these people – perhaps not individually but what FB allows me to do is send out a ‘global’ ‘mass’ message via my status updates that lets me put out my thoughts and it allows me to connect with my immediate circle of friends as well as my outer circle – whoever may be ‘online’ at the time and therefore enable us to strike up a conversation quite literally out of nowhere !

We are able to organize our friends and family on a particular networking site; catch up with friends via photo and video uploads – so you can keep track of what’s going on in their lives even if you aren’t really a part of it on a regular basis.  Not to mention, all the events being organized in your own city via business networking and social stuff as well !

Mobile-social-networks-value-mapI was reading a really interesting article titled Social Networking : Changing Conversation Not Friendship – which talks about how we are now making online-friends and developing new ways of communicating with each other.  Another really good read was on the BBC website titled Social Networks are ‘new e-mail’.

There was a point where we would communicate by way of meeting face-to-face; use physical letters & post cards if there was a geographic distance; the internet came along and we progressed on to emails; IM services came about followed by Video Conferencing services; and now we’re passively able to communicate each and every thought to a mass audience without specifying a certain person.

I think it’s a brilliant advance for us all – and technology is going to constantly be evolving so who knows what the next generation will be doing to communicate with each other !

The art of conversation

Note Before You Continue Reading : I wrote this post a few months ago but never got around to posting it … Just came across it – and wanted to share it with you

The_Fine_Art_Of_Conversation_by_inkblort

Have you ever thought about the words that we use when having a conversation ? We tend to take words for granted – a part of a speech – a part of normal every day conversation ?

Does that mean that we take the words we hear a ‘given’ ? Does that mean we believe everything we hear or does that imply we automatically mean everything we say ?

I actually asked my first question in this post to a car full of people that I was travelling with – and they did come out with some interesting answers.  One person said that conversations between people are almost for the sake of saying something – almost for the sake of just talking / responding because ‘we have to’ and not because we really thought about what we are saying. It’s as if we were on autopilot mode.

Think about it … we can’t possibly believe or mean everything that we say to another ? What about those words spoken out of anger or sheer disgust ? Could it be a spur of the moment speech or our thought process at the time ?

"To listen closely and reply well is the highest perfection we are able to attain in the art of conversation."

Another blog facelift

I couldn’t sleep last night as my foot was aching quite badly (yep it’s not healed as yet and I swear I’m not the accident or illness prone type !!)…. As I lay on my bed with my foot propped up on four cushions, I went about looking at various blog templates – and then finally decided that I should try my hand at testing another design out.

website-facelift_02 Here’s the one I have finally picked … for those that know me, this is not exactly typical of me.  I really contemplated about it – actually – the butterfly – but since its a nice black 3 column layout with a splash of colour – I thought I would just ignore the butterfly and use the template.

Now I’m playing around with this template – and experimenting a little bit.

Please do let me know what you think about it ? If I should go back to my previous one or change the text colours around.

Also wanted to know if some of you are seeing my images in a sort of shadowy circle ?? I currently use Windows Live Writer to write up my blogs, and on here, and on my browser – the images come out as they are.  However based on a comment from the time of my last blog face lift apparently the photographs I put up don’t always come out in shape :(

Anyway – hope you like it =) and I’ll try to let this template last at least 2 months before changing it

Public or Private – Does It Affect Your Writing ?

Morning all … I came across a really cool blog earlier today called ‘The Way I See It’ .. and I could completely relate to it … It’s one to add to the reading list if you don’t already know about it …

My blog title is taken from this blog and a post that really interested me … I consider myself to be a personal and sporadic blogger … I’m not here to make money or change the lives of others with my views – but am here just to get all those extra thoughts running around my head out of my system and leaving a tiny mark out there in the blogosphere.

Blogging is an outlet for me to express myself and my views to an audience that may or may not judge me; to an audience that may actually enjoy what I have to say or to provide a gateway of free thoughts for those who just need to ‘get away’ !

I’ve never been one to keep a diary – and I don’t think I use my blog as a diary per say. I had heard about blogging a few years ago and went on to make my account live in 2007 but didn’t get around to actually writing in it till the June / July of 2008.

I knew when I started my blog – I had wanted to cover certain areas 1) my random thoughts 2) music that I was really interested in and 3) a place to capture the poetry that I had written or read over the years. The smart ass that I am – I set up – not one – but THREE different blogs – and very soon realised that it was not possible for me to maintain those – so I figured out how to import / export all the content to this main blog out here.

So now, as you know this blog more or less delves into various topics – from things that interest me, things and attitudes that bother me, some music, some poetry, and just general rambling of sorts. I like to believe that my neighbours and readers will have an opinion on what I write about, and the posts that go Without comments have been visited by lurkers.

I reckon that in my 27 years, I’ve had a pretty exciting and adventurous life – and should I be able to capture it ALL down – then it would make for a fabulous book =) I am an avid reader – so have a variety of blogs on my reading my list that range from personal, spiritual, all the way to business blogs. I find that I am able to relate in some way to the blogs that deal with personal life experiences.

So … we get back to the original question that Robin had posted. Is what you write about affected by who knows about your blog?

My honest answer to him was …. I've been blogging for almost a year now - and funnily enough - only a 'handful' of close friends know about my blog - and ironically - my two best friends don't even read my blog - its a bunch of other friends who do - who I feel could relate with it and hence I told them about the blog. Mine is not a 'personal-personal' blog - I do write whatever I am thinking about .. sometimes it can be personal (I think) and other times - its a subject that I have a strong view about ... And you're right - there are some family members or friends that I rather NOT have read my blog in case they get all uptight about it ... saying that, there are some topics I do not write about Just In Case someone else I know will get on to read about it ... Although to be on the safe side, I don't use any real names - I stick to initials or nicknames for people, nor have I disclosed my own real name or photograph ...

I prefer it this way … I did for a while upload my blog posts to my Facebook account – and quite a few people used to comment on certain topics but somehow I didn’t like the idea that ‘my friends’ knew about my blog … Weird right ?? Unlike Robin, I’m not a very private person – in fact I’m quite an outgoing person who really doesn’t care much what others think about what I have to say or do (not in a bad rash manner but in a ‘your opinion doesn’t bother me manner') … Ok that still didn’t come out right but you get my point ??

I like the idea that ever since I started blogging – I have found a whole new community of people who are of the same mindset as me – people who may or not have shared the experiences that I have – but they are open minded individuals who are able to pop into someone else’s life and give an unbiased opinion. This community is completely non-judgemental and that’s what I love about my fellow blogger neighbours. They take what you have to say at face value and don’t question the ‘who, what, if, why,’ etc

In real life – some people are too caught up in the notion that everything should be done in XY manner and if it doesn’t follow protocol then it is not acceptable. People are bogged down with societal views and haven’t had the time to form their own personal views.

How “private” is your blog? Do your family and friends know that you write online? Do you care?

Goal ! Home Run ! Hit a Century !!

Wow ! I’m quite excited right about now !

100-posts-made-by-suzi I have officially crossed 100 Blog Posts !!

My last post was actually Post 101 ! And my 100th post was Test Your Reading Skills.

Not only that – but I also have 50 – that’s right Fifty neighbours checking me out :)

Now that’s what I call a home run baby !!

Thank you all for being around for the constant support and comments that have kept me going =)

I don’t have any nice hand made cards that I can give you like Susan, but if any of you need any event planning advice – hit me up and I will help you out :)

Su.pr … No More Multi-Status Updates !!

For the last few days, I have been driving myself slightly crazy trying to find a platform whereby I could update my Twitter account with my Facebook status instead of vice-versa.

I am currently active on various networking sites including ASW, Internations, Facebook,  Plaxo, Linked-In and Twitter

I don’t really use Twitter that much, reasons being :

  1. don’t see the point in shortening my thoughts Twitter-Logo
  2. I would actually have to log into it and then copy my FB status
  3. all my friends (yes all 1298 of them) are on FB – so why do I really need to update the 18 people on Twitter !
  4. what’s the point of Twitter when I’m not really promoting a ‘brand’ per say .. although I think I would make a fabulous brand ambassador .. especially for Vodka or any form of dessert

facebook Facebook on the other hand – I am on it everyday without fail – and not just once or twice – but a few times a day.  It really is one of the easiest and quickest ways to get updates on friends and family … I kid you not – it is not cheap to be in touch with almost 50 cousins spread out across the globe ! Nor is it easy to track down your high school and university mates or even work colleagues … and FB provides the perfect platform according to me.

Now that I have digressed enough, the point of this post is that I have found a solution to my problem !  As mentioned, I’ve spent the last days trying to figure out how I can update my Twitter account with my Facebook status messages.  WHY would I want to do that considering I have given 4 reasons for not using Twitter …

The answer is simple … it is for YOU – my neighbours ! I realise I am not a super regular blogger, but I have noticed that I could write a mini blog out of my FB status updates … (hold your horses – I’m getting to the point) … I know that Blogger allows for us to showcase Twitter updates – and FB also has something similar.  Since I don’t post on Twitter  - that widget doesn’t work for me; and the FB widget – has a few flaws on it …

Do you see what I am getting at … ??? By finding this one platform that lets me update BOTH statuses – means that I can now install the Twitter widget on my blog – and that way – you guys can get my mini feed !! Doesn’t that sound Super to you ??

supr_logo_emboss So if you are a Facebook & Twitter user – you must go and check out SU.PR

Wooooooooohoooooo !!!! I’m soooo excited !

Test Your Reading Skills

I’m quite sure that at some point or another, you would have seen something similar in your emails …

I came across this in a non-email format, and wanted to share it with you all :)

Happy reading !

Animal Escapades : Same-Sex Penguins

It’s not just any penguins we are talking about here – I’m referring to two pairs of same-sex Male penguins – in Germany and San Francisco !

Let’s talk about our first pair of penguins from Germany and have recently hatched a chick of their very own !!! I came across this article in the  paper sometime last month and had book marked it to eventually blog about it.

gay penguins Basically two homosexual penguins at a German zoo (who are a part of a 6 strong community of gay penguins) have successfully hatched an egg after it was rejected by it’s parents and are doting over their baby chick.

The pair, known as Z and Vielpunkt are quite protective over the baby chick (sex unknown) and act exactly like a hetrosexual couple in taking turns for caring and feeding the chick.

Here’s a picture of them guarding the enclosure where the adopted chick is kept.

The gay penguins rose to fame when 4 Swedish female penguins were brought in to ‘cure’  them … obviously with no success.  Incidentally there is nothing unusual about homosexuality amongst animals.

Now if we cross over the globe and head to San Francisco zoo, where Harry & Pepper who are Magellanic penguins – and been nesting together for 6 years after they were allowed to incubate an egg rejected by another pair – have been split up by a conniving female penguin, Linda who was widowed last winter.

Molting season is coming up and whilst Linda & Harry have been nesting for a few months now (she obviously didn’t want to stay single and a widow at her age); the zoo keepers are keen to see if Harry will spend any time with Pepper.

Hmmm and I thought maybe I have issues … I feel for Pepper !!

World News :

  1. Gay Penguins Hatch An Egg, Adopt Chick  & Same-sex Penguin couple raising Chick
  2. Same Sex Penguin Couple Split

So Simple .. It’s Complicated

Normally I reserve that line for myself … I’m so simple – it’s apparently complicated (for others) !

But no – my experiences in Bombay have just made me realise how bloody complicated other people ! And really – compared to them – I am pretty simple and straight forward !

So here’s the general gist .. and please feel free to give me some feedback on this – because I don’t get it !  About 2 months ago – I met a guy – Banker Boy – at a mutual friends’ party – and turns out we worked in the same office building on different floors and we exchanged contact details (either on FB or at the party) .. although I think it was on FB after someone tagged his picture …

That same week, we exchanged a few text messages, agreed to meet for lunch and the same night – he invited me to join his friends for a party.  I did meet him but only as I was attending a party at a venue next door to where his group was.  After that – we’ve met up once a week either for lunch or in the evening for coffee and a drive (and mind you he’d moved offices as well so it was an actual effort on both our parts to meet up).  Then as you all know – I had my nasty flu – and he even came by my place to check on me when his crew went out to the bar below my building; and also drove 13 kms out of his way to come and take me for lunch whilst I was stuck at home for those 10 days. magnetic attraction

Now during this time – I’ve noticed a few things … He always initiated the day / time that we would meet up; he would make the effort to link up with me at a party that I would be at in the evenings – even for 15 minutes and then leave to go on to whatever other party he was attending with his friends; we would text / sms each other close to 15 times a day AND even talk for short bursts (5 min convos) during the course of the day …. however we have never even kissed … we’ve flirted and teased and flirted more .. and that’s about it … and being the kind of person I am – I would like to know what’s going on … ‘cos really it didn’t seem very ‘buddy buddy’ …

Last week we were supposed to meet up for Sunday lunch – and circumstances turned that he left his phone with a work colleague when they went out for the weekend, and totally ditched me for lunch and I obviously didn’t hear from him till Monday … And I was quite irritated.  No one likes to be stood up without explanation right ?

So on Thursday or Friday I sent him a text suggesting isn’t it about time that he makes up for ditching me for lunch … He replies and its positive – and he even mentioned how he thought I was pissed off and hence took a few days to reply to me.  Now check this - HE has initiated that we meet up on Sunday for lunch, dessert and a movie !  I haven’t even said anything about what we should do etc. It’s all HIM !

He picks me up on Sunday – we go for lunch to a nice restaurant – have a glass of wine – we’re flirting – we’ve held hands – gone for dessert – I’m feeding him brownies whilst he’s driving … we’ve even done the hand-on-hand whilst on gear as well … He drops me home – says goodbye to me in the car – 3 times with a hug … and sorta tweaking my nose … Mind you, throughout the afternoon, he has complimented me a few times, suggested plans to meet up over the next week which include going for a play and to teach me investments AND even to meet me the same night AFTER he was done with his family commitments  … so I took the bull by the horns and suggested that we meet that night and I’d give him a kiss good night too …

First step taken … sent him a text message later telling him that I really did have a good time and that I was being serious about meeting up that evening – after all I had fed him brownies and as a p.s. note I added that his boys would cuss him if he ditched on such an offer … I was making a joke and being playful about it …

His response – which came almost 2 hours later … see below and let me know if you can make head or tail sense of it …

“Hey had a great time too.  That’s a very sweet offer and although my boys would be pissed with me for saying no to an offer like that, they understand that I am more interested in being friends.”

Seriously …. that’s what he sent me … digest it …

It’s such a simple response – and very nicely done as well mind you – but seriously – what the fuck ??? Sure friends – do all the things – him and I have done … but not always one-on-one …. Him and I are not best buds nor are we friends from donkey years … we actually met up once at a party and after that it has been one-on-one interaction between the two of us …

So of course my response to him covered my ass and his ass too so as avoid any future embarrassment … I actually told him that we were friends and he ruined my moment of being able to hand him a Hersheys Kiss chocolate bar … and that I’d talk to him later as I was watching Scrubs …

That should have been the end of it … Had I not heard from him after that – it would be fine … but guess what …

scrubs 2“Ya know, I’m sure you’re gonna agree. I really relate to JD in Scrubs. I’m as goofy and stupid as him. Enjoy Scrubs”

Have you ever watched Scrubs ? Do you know JD’s character ?? That was the icing on the cake because ironically I had just finished Season 6 of Scrubs and had started season 7 where JD realises that he is a “self-sabotager” and how he freaks out when any relationship becomes serious !!!

Give me a break …. of all the characters on TV shows – he picks JD as his reference ??? It was such a simple response … he should have just left it … but no … lets make it complicated with that reference !

Why make that reference ?? Does that mean he is interested but not sure ‘how’ interested ? or does it just mean that he’s got issues with an ex flame that he’s not over ?

At least his initial message was ‘just want to be friends’ … it’s another perspective to look at and think that his actions didn’t exactly reflect those of a friend … Honestly – I have lots of friends – and even with my close guy friends here in Bombay – I don’t exactly spend the one-on-one weekly quality time with them … yeah sure we hang out – more like once a month properly or as a group – not always as individuals …and even more unlikely that I would make time & effort to meet a new person that often if I didn’t think that there was something ‘more’ to it … know what I mean ??

Conclusion : Indian Men have way too many complexities to even be considered simple !

Do As Much As You Can Today

I’m trying not to force my brain to come up with something fun and witty to keep you all entertained.

I’m going through a rollercoaster ride of emotions right about now that range from being sleepy, drained out, over worked, feeling like an old piece of almost broken down machinery, a bit irritated with the guys I know, and cranky over the weather too …

I came across a funny signboard whilst surfing the net today … Found it over at a store called Funny JPS, which you must check out for a few laughs :)

Monsoon Traffic Hell

I just wish I could have taken a picture of the traffic hell I went through last night !!

It started raining (monsoon season here in India) early evening yesterday and by the time I left work there were huge puddles outside and I was drenched before I even got into my car !

The distance from work to home is a maximum of 13 kms … guess what … it took me 2.5 hours to travel that distance yesterday !!! 2.5 hours is not a joke !!! My mate MG and I were in the car – and we literally sat back and put on ‘Gone in 60 Mumbai TrafficSeconds’ on the laptop and watched most of the movie !!!

I live in South Mumbai and that’s the kind of traffic I faced going back home … I was feeling even worse for the people leaving town and heading towards the suburbs because there was a stretch of road for about 6 kms that was just chock-a-blocked with stand-still traffic !!! And MG wanted me to turn around to drop him home !!! yeaaaaaaaaaah right !!

And this is just the beginning !! This isn’t even close to the prediction for later this year ! Apparently this year the rains are going to be worse than the floods of 26th July 2005the forecast for this year is the highest tides (5.05 meters) that India would have seen in 100 years !   Mumbai's municipal council has admitted that it isn't equipped to handle more than 25 millimeters of rain per hour, coupled with a high tide of more than 4.5 meters (in 2005 it was 4.48 meters)

monsoon carFor those of you that don’t know it, the floods were caused by the eighth heaviest ever recorded 24-hour rainfall figure of 994 mm (39.1 inches) which lashed the metropolis, and intermittently continued for the next day. 644 mm (25.4 inches) was received within the 12-hr period between 8am and 8pm.  Torrential rainfall continued for the next week. (courtesy Wikipedia).

I wasn’t in the city when this happened – but know of a lot of people who suffered due to the floods !   From the above picture – you can see how the cars were being flooded !

So … as the monsoon continues to pour in Mumbai; people will continue to battle traffic snarls and wade through waterlogged roads and huge potholes !!! And I’m going to drive myself crazy :(

Scary Cats

I’ve managed to escape unscathed last night with nothing more than a slightly bruised ego.

I look back at my day and am just not really surprised by the sheer number of random incidents that took place  yesterday !  After all it is my life we are talking about !

Morning

egg truck Late for work because a cart contained egg racks tumbled over and blocked the road coming off a small flyover.

Was left standing in a drizzle waiting for my car to arrive after being stuck at a traffic junction

Met up with RR for lunch at Hard Rock Cafe where our verbal exchange proved to be spicier than the Tabasco

I got a call confirming that there would a be photo shoot (yes !) for a gadget & lifestyle magazine (yes you read right) at my place today and I had to rush to get back home

Evening

Went to pick up NC with MG and headed over to the ATM to withdraw some cash; got stuck in nightmare traffic because Sonia Gandhi (famous politician) was in town for the opening of the Worli-Bandra Sea Link; got bandra worli sea link to the ATM only to realise that I had left my hand bag at home so had no debit card to use for the withdrawal.

Got back home; got some work done; MG disappeared which meant that NC and I were left to ourselves to try and figure out how to create a wireless sharing network between two laptops.

Yeah that didn’t go so well.  My brother came to the rescue and labelled the network connection as Idiot Sisters’ !! A bit rude I think LOL

MG was still MIA and NC decided to transfer some music across to me that was fresh from Jakarta … erm yeah since we weren’t a part of the whole ‘setting up the network’ process – we didn’t quite know what we were doing .. so the files NC was sending to me … just got copied … onto her own laptop – and we’d basically spent about 40 minutes waiting for the transfer to complete !!

Then NC couldn’t find her house keys anywhere – and it was coming to 1 a.m … so the 3 of us trekked down towards my car to check if her keys fell out there …

Luckily we found the keys, said our good nights, and as I was about to step in towards the elevator … I saw them … the menacing three toms !

cat trio Lately there have been quite a few cats in my building .. and here standing at the steps of my block were 3 huge tom cats – who were prowling around near the elevator … and honestly – they were just stalking the area as if it were their damn territory !! I swear they could have passed for the cats in this picture !

It took us all a few minutes of persuading and shooing the cats away – and then finally MG had to go and tickle one of the toms under it’s chin to try to distract it from launching its’ assault on me whilst I tried very hard to get into the elevator !!

I even shrieked a little bit … I’m a dog lover .. not a cat person … cat’s seem to like me but they are evil creatures and can switch moods at any time .. Trust me – I know – I’ve been scratched by a kitten I was kitten-sitting – in my sleep !!! the punk came and sat on me – woke me up – and then clawed my face !!!

So I ran myself into the elevator whilst MG distracted the big boss cat which was purring away at his chin stroking – and safely locked myself up in my room – in bed – with only a slightly bruised ego – as two of my friends saw me at my chicken best !

Books and Beyond

Since my last post – I have had a few interesting hours – and feel that I finally have enough material to cover a couple of posts.

Tangerine has just ‘tagged’ me in one of her posts and one of her friends’ Roshni has written on the same subject …

If you are an avid reader or book worm or just enjoy browsing through a novel in your free time – then do follow up on this post and share your favourite reads …

Here are the rules

  • Don't take too long to think about it. Fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you.  First fifteen (or as many as you can) you can recall in no more than 15 minutes. Tag up to 15 friends, including me because I'm interested in seeing what books my friends choose

My version of the rules since I’m a bit of a rebel (and really couldn’t write mini reviews of so many books LOL)

  1. First 5-8 books that you can recall – you could have read them recently or something from back in high school
  2. Short description and / or Mini-review
  3. Tag your friends including me because I’m interested (honest – I am !!)

The Kite Runner by Khalid Hossieni

kite-runner1 I only read this book about 2 months ago – and it blew me away.  The sheer simplicity behind the writing; the flowing descriptions transported me to another world.

A novel covering humanity, friendship, betrayal, loyalty, acceptance, and survival.  It is an intricate novel with twists and graphical turns in its plot.  A must read.

Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat

5 Point Someone I’ve read both ‘One Night @ the Call Center’ and ‘Three Mistakes of my Life’ … The author tends to narrate in the first person through a central character and speckles the book with alternative perspectives of some of the supporting characters.

I’ve never been to IIT – nor do I have any idea about what IIT’ians are meant to be like – but through this book – I feel like I got a hidden peek into the insights of the life of engineering students in one of the premier educational institutes.

Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody with William Hoffer

not without my daughter An extremely intense read …. Betty is an American woman married to an educated Iranian doctor based in the US with whom she has a daughter.  This book is about Betty's attempt to escape her husband Sayyed and return to her country along with her daughter who are both trapped in Iran after a family vacation.

This book is a stomach churning saga of a courageous woman, her escape, her total devotion to her child and their nightmare attempt to return home.

Princess + Daughters of Arabia – Jean Sassoon

Princess I was first introduced to Jean Sassoon through Princess.  I used to live in Dubai for 12 years – and this book caught my attention as I used to have friends from Saudi Arabia.

The book highlights the life of a Saudi Princess – and the difficulties she has to endure for being born a woman ! She lives out a luxurious prison sentence where she risks death for being a ‘difficult woman’.

Once you pick this book up – I guarantee that you will not be putting it down.  I highly recommend the sequel – Daughters of Arabia – once you read these books – you would appreciate the life you have and never forget the contents either !

The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger

devil wears prada A very light and easy book.  I honestly picked it out because I liked the cover :) I’m a big fan of stilettos .. and let’s face it – if Merryl Streep is going to act in a movie made out of a book – the book is worth picking up :)

The book is about a young college graduate who finds a job as the personal assistant to one of the most powerful fashion editors in New York. This is a first person narrative about the ups & downs of working in the fashion industry.  Glamorous – right ? Wrong !!! More like hellish !! Read more to discover the outcome.

Everyone Worth Knowing by Lauren Weisberger

everyone worth knowing I’ll admit that other than the cover of this book; the fact that I wanted something light and easy to read in the car – the book appealed to me purely because I’m a crazy social networker :) and if I didn’t want to slap a few celebrities – I’d probably be living the high life hehehe

A story about a single woman in New York caught up in the city’s social circuit due to her job in PR – about balancing her family and personal life whilst being splashed around in the gossip columns.  A relatively realistic way at looking at the PR & Events Industry !

Angels & Demons – Dan Brown

angels_demons I read this one after reading The Da Vinci Code and found it to be just as enticing.  The book is full of suspense – although does delve into way too much character backgrounds – and takes the reader through a journey of solving puzzles and mystery whilst trying to beat the clock !

If you enjoy thriller and suspense novels – then this is a must read ! There are so many twists and turns that you need to remember not to put the book down until you finish a particular chapter.

Any book by Lee Child

I absolutely adore this author ! His style of writing is mesmerising ! He uses only one central character in all his books – Jack Reacher – who comes across as the perfect epitome of a man :) No wonder I’m so drawn in hehe.  Some of my favourites include : The Hard Way; Die Trying; Nothing to Lose amongst a few.

The authors writing style immediate captivates the reader and draws them further and further into the book until you can’t stop.  You honestly can’t !

Some of the other authors & books I enjoy include (in no particular order)

  1. Harry Potter Series
  2. David Baldacci – Saving Faith, Total Control
  3. Jeffery Archer – Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less; 11th Commandment; Kane & Abel; The Prodigal Daughter
  4. Stephen King – Pet Cemetery, IT,
  5. Dean Koontz
  6. Paulo Cohelo – The Alchemist
  7. I also enjoy books with funky covers – they tend to be great for light reading :)

Now I’m looking forward to reading about your favourite books !!
